Timeframe

The project runs from January 2024 till January 2027

Resources

The project is supported by the philanthropic association Realdania. It involves seven partners covering the entire range from data gathering and development to implementation and dissemination. The project is coordinated by Danish Technological Institute. Read more about each of the partners and their contribution to the project through the list of project partners.

Background

Phase 1 developed a combined solution of a green wall and a heat pump. The project was successfully completed and holds significant commercial potential. Phase 2 further develops the concept with an add-on solution that utilizes the green wall for cooling purposes.

The project ensures economically viable solutions for green walls and accelerated installation, bringing nature into the city and breaking up barren, hard surfaces.

Objectives

The objective of Phase 2 of the Nordic Green Climate Wall (NGCW) project is to further develop the concept into a reversible system capable of both heating and cooling, as well as storing energy. This phase aims to build on the proof-of-concept achieved in Phase 1 by addressing cooling needs, particularly during summer when heat demand is low but cooling demand is high.

By enhancing the system to provide cost-effective and environmentally friendly comfort cooling, Phase 2 seeks to improve the energy efficiency of buildings while promoting the broader adoption of green walls. The project aims to integrate these dual functionalities into a sustainable concept that supports urban greening, reduces energy consumption, and accelerates the installation of green walls in urban environments.

Ultimately, Phase 2 focuses on creating a scalable and economically viable solution that combines energy efficiency with the environmental benefits of green walls, bringing nature closer to urban areas and improving urban life quality.

Goal and the expected outcome of the project

The goal of Phase 2 is to further develop the system into a reversible heating and cooling solution, including energy storage, while integrating the concept into urban architecture. This phase aims to accelerate urban greening by utilizing green walls for cooling purposes, enhancing their functionality and commercial appeal.

The expected outcomes of Phase 2 include:

  • Development of a concept for the technical and social integration of NGCW into architecture, including DGNB quantification and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
  • Creation and testing of a reversible heating/cooling add-on concept with energy storage.
  • Testing of native plants to improve biodiversity, including growth profiles under thermal impact.
  • Completion and demonstration of the technical system design for NGCW, including the heating/cooling add-on.

The results will be evaluated based on achieving the project’s milestones, culminating in the development of the final NGCW system with the heating/cooling add-on.

Following Phase 2, a subsequent project will ensure the implementation and commercialization of results from both phases. This includes establishing commercial roles, creating a business concept, setting up two demo sites under commercial conditions, and preparing for market introduction through initiatives such as Realdania’s “Innovation to Market” program.
